It is incredibly frustrating to read about the Rotherham scandal because withholding details of the case to ‘not give oxygen’ to racists is so incompetent and stupid on multiple levels. Racists were going to launch into rants about savage, predatory Pakistani men anyway but now you’ve given them additional ammunition about creeping political correctness and how we need to rethink the debate about multiculturalism with a politically incorrect lens.
When in fact, the suppression of evidence by police and social services for fear of being accused of racism is their own issue that they need to come to terms with and in no way encouraged by most British-Pakistanis or pro-immigration advocates. And if Asian community and political leaders were complicit in the cover up, that’s about their own fear of losing Asian votes and support and that’s to do with the cowardice of politicians and the corrupting nature of power.
For racists, there is inevitably a refrain from pretending to not be racist where they can display their ignorance in places like The Telegraph and Forbes and under the guise of debating the extent of political correctness in the world, they can write stuff like: “The people of Rotherham know that it is unsafe for a girl to take a taxi-ride from someone with Asian features; let slip the mere hint that Pakistani Muslims are more likely than indigenous Englishmen to commit sexual crimes and you will be branded as a racist and an Islamophobe” Not to mention racist tumblrs like fuckyeahcolonialism and european-traditionalist that can be more vocal than usual and attract fans who have secretly always agreed with them to come out of the woodwork.
All of them are of course, cherry picking facts from the actual independent inquiry by Prof Alexis Jay that broke the scandal and ignoring statements like "There is no simple link between race and child sexual exploitation, and across the UK the greatest numbers of perpetrators of CSE are white men" (11.2). They all ignore sections of the report that state that Pakistani women and girls were also abused but women’s groups say they don’t come forward for fear of hurting their future marriage prospects (11.14) and being ostracized and alienated by their families and community (11.16). Those parts of the report will never get the attention that the dangers of political correctness has.
