Basically.

I’m not much of a TV person either but I saw M.I.A. show the finger and then I observed the reaction(s) from viewers which made me think: Damn, they sure don’t like seeing a middle finger on TV, do they. But then I saw Adele do the exact same and no one really reacted. That’s when I thought: Good job, M.I.A. You keep that finger up in the air.

Meh. I think this actually has to do with being allowed to swear and flip people off on UK TV while not being allowed to do the same, not just during the Super Bowl, but even at 11:30 on Saturday night on network TV. A lot of people, white and non-white, have gotten banned or censored on SNL for that reason. Now there’s a rant to be made about puritanical American morals about what is appropriate for network TV and what isn’t (e.g. “Criminal Minds” is one of the goriest shows I’ve seen on TV) but this isn’t it.
